All’ingresso di quella che era la “Casa della Gioventù Littoria” (Roma, Trastevere), campeggia ancora oggi un’enorme cartina dell’Africa. Solo due paesi hanno un nome: Libia e Etiopia, le “imprese africane” del regime, di cui sono ben marcati i confini. Tutto il resto del continente è solo spazio bianco, venato dalla traccia azzurra del Nilo e dello Zambesi.
Muta vastità, come nelle antiche mappe medievali. Fuori dalle rotte conosciute il nulla o, peggio, solo pericolosi e sinistri luoghi selvaggi.
Dal 1930 fino ai primi anni del nostro terzo millennio, Kodachrome si affermò come la pellicola che “racconta il pianeta e i suoi colori”. Quasi un secolo di vita terrestre. Senza spazi vuoti.
Switch on con una camera analogica caricata Kodachrome, 36 pose. Oltre il “mare nostrum”, sulle piste sahariane e ancora più a sud. Una serie di scatti di origine analogica, realizzati durante i due decenni ’80 e ’90 nei paesi sahariani, sub sahariani e del “corno d’Africa”, restaurati e rielaborati attraverso il digitale.
Una sorta di macchina del tempo che ci offre colori, volti, rituali, devozioni, storie e personaggi da Benin, Ghana, Chad, Mali, Niger e Togo. Che vogliamo condividere, senza nostalgia, con chi è più giovane e con chiunque sogni di percorrere - e raccontare - i grandi “spazi bianchi”. Ovunque si trovino.

AfricaKodachrome, the Color tells
At the entrance of what once was the “Casa della Gioventù Littoria” (Roma, Trastevere), lies to this day an immense map of Africa. Only two countries have a name: Libya and Ethiopia, the “African enterprises” of the fascist regime, which borders are well defined. From 1930 until the early years of our third millennium, Kodachrome established itself as the film that “tells the planet and its colors”. Almost a century of terrestrial life. Without empty spaces.

A series of shots of analog origin, taken during the two decades of the 80s and 90s in the Saharan, sub-Saharan, and “Horn of Africa” countries, restored and re-elaborated through digital.
A sort of time machine that offers us colors, faces, rituals, stories, and characters from Benin, Ghana, Chad, Mali, Niger, and Togo. That we want to share, without nostalgia, with those who are younger and with anyone who dreams of walking - and telling - the great “empty spaces”. Wherever they are.
