Mio padre è sopravvissuto alla catastrofe del terremoto di Gibellina nel ‘68. Parte della mia famiglia visse prima nelle baracche e poi si trasferì nella nuova città rinata nel Belice che attirò artisti, urbanisti, architetti e artigiani richiamati dal grande e visionario sindaco Ludovico Corrao. Non vivevo lì ma ci ritornavo spesso. Da piccolo avvertivo una forte attrazione per la sua forma, i grandi spazi, le case nuove e per gli oggetti strani che abitavano quell’universo di strade. Crescendo cominciai ad apprezzare quegli oggetti e passavo interi pomeriggi a camminare per le vie quasi deserte fotografando quelle forme solitarie nello spazio. Mi sentivo fuori dal mondo, dal tempo. Riuscivo ad astrarmi dalla realtà pensando a luoghi lontani, spaziali, magici. Quegli oggetti silenziosi cominciavano a vivere diventando macchine, simboli costruiti per dialogare con il cielo e con lo spazio stellare. Erano frammenti della memoria di bambino che ritornavano a vivere nella mia mente.

My father survived the catastrophe of the Gibellina earthquake in 1968. Part of my family first lived in the shacks and then moved to the new city, reborn in the Belice, which attracted artists, urban planners, architects and artisans, all welcomed by the great and visionary mayor Ludovico Corrao. I didn't live there but I used to go there often. As a child, I was fascinated by its shape, large spaces, new houses and strange objects that inhabited that universe of streets. Growing up, I began to appreciate those objects and spent whole afternoons walking through the almost deserted streets, photographing those solitary shapes in space. I felt out of the world, out of time. I was able to escape from reality by thinking of distant, spatial, magical places. Those silent objects started to come alive by turning into machines, symbols built to converse with the sky and the stellar space. They were fragments of a child's memory that came back to life in my mind.
